TIMES MALAYSIA, PROBOLINGGO – Mount Bromo has long been one of the favorite tourist destinations in Indonesia, not only for domestic tourists but also for international visitors. With its stunning scenery, breathtaking sunrise, and the adventure of riding a jeep to the summit, Mount Bromo offers an unforgettable experience. However, to get the best out of it, there are a few things that need to be prepared.
We spoke with Farras, a tour guide who has been accompanying tourists around Bromo for years. Here are some tips from Farras to make your visit to Mount Bromo more comfortable, safe, and of course, memorable.
1. When is the Best Time to Visit?
According to Farras, the best time to visit Mount Bromo is during the dry season, which is between April and September. During this time, the sky tends to be clear, providing a great chance to witness a beautiful sunrise. "If you come during the rainy season, thick fog and rain can obstruct the view. It's better to choose the dry season to get the best experience," said Farras.
However, if you want to avoid the crowds, Farras recommends coming early in the week or outside of holiday seasons. "August is usually crowded with tourists, especially foreign ones. If you want a quieter atmosphere, try to avoid weekends and long holidays," he added.
2. Leave Early for the Best Sunrise
One of Mount Bromo’s main attractions is the sunrise view from Penanjakan Peak. To enjoy this stunning sunrise, Farras suggests starting the journey early, around 3-4 AM. "The best time to see the sunrise is between 5 and 6 AM. So, make sure you're already at Penanjakan Peak before that time," Farras explained.
To reach Penanjakan, you can use the jeep services provided by the locals. Usually, the jeep will pick you up from your accommodation in the early morning, ensuring you arrive on time to witness the sunrise.
3. Choose Accommodation that is Close and Comfortable
Farras added that choosing the right accommodation is also important to maximize your experience in Bromo. Many accommodations around the Cemoro Lawang area offer direct views of Mount Bromo. "Choose accommodation that is close to the entrance so you don't spend too much time on the road when you want to head out to see the sunrise," he advised.
Additionally, make sure your accommodation provides heating facilities or thick blankets, as temperatures in Bromo during the early morning can be very cold, ranging between 5-10 degrees Celsius. "Bromo is extremely cold, especially in the morning. So, it's better to choose a comfortable and warm place to stay," he said.
4. Physical Preparation and Appropriate Clothing
Climbing Mount Bromo isn't particularly difficult, but Farras still recommends preparing yourself physically. Also, wearing appropriate clothing is crucial to stay comfortable during your visit. "Wear layered and windproof clothing. Trekking shoes are also important because the terrain in Bromo can be sandy and slippery, especially near the crater," said Farras.
Additionally, don't forget to bring a hat, gloves, and a scarf to protect yourself from the cold wind, especially when you are at Penanjakan.
5. Choose a Safe and Experienced Jeep
The journey to Penanjakan Peak or Bromo Crater by jeep is one of the most anticipated experiences for tourists. However, Farras reminded travelers to always choose a safe jeep driven by an experienced driver. "Make sure the jeep is in good condition, and the driver knows the Bromo terrain well. There are many jeeps here, but choose one that is trusted and officially licensed," he said.
Additionally, ensure the jeep you're riding is equipped with seat belts for extra safety, as the route to Penanjakan is quite steep and rocky.
6. Visit Bromo Crater and Teletubbies Hill
After enjoying the sunrise, don’t miss the opportunity to explore Bromo Crater. The journey to the crater can be done on foot or by riding a horse rented by the locals. "Once you reach the sea of sand, you can walk toward the crater. The walk is not too far, but it can be challenging due to the sandy path," said Farras.
In addition, there’s also Teletubbies Hill, a green meadow located on the southern side of Bromo. This place has become a favorite photo spot for tourists because of its lush and picturesque scenery.
7. Respect Local Customs and Traditions
Bromo is also known for the strong customs of the Tenggerese people. One of the most famous traditions is the Kasada ceremony, usually held during the full moon in July or August. "Always respect local culture and traditions when visiting Bromo. Don’t litter and keep the environment clean," Farras advised.
By preparing your trip according to the tips above, you can enjoy the beauty of Mount Bromo to the fullest. From the breathtaking sunrise to exploring the sandy crater, Bromo offers an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and adventurers alike. (*)
