TIMES MALAYSIA, JAKARTA – Pulo Majeti, located in Purwaharja, Banjar City, West Java, is one of Indonesia’s most unique cultural heritage sites. Known for its spiritual aura and deep-rooted traditions, it has recently captured international attention after being chosen as a filming location for Asian Express Season 6.
This Hungarian reality show brings a thrilling adventure-race format to viewers around the world. It showcases exotic destinations, traditional cultures, and real-life challenges across Asia. After filming its first two episodes in Malaysia, the crew moved to Indonesia as the next destination.
From episodes 3 to 13, Asian Express will feature locations across West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, and Bali. Pulo Majeti proudly represents West Java, not only for its natural beauty but also its cultural richness.
Adventure Meets Culture: Inside the Asian Express Format
According to Maya Dewi, Head of Tourism at Banjar City’s Youth, Sports, and Tourism Office, Asian Express is not just about racing — it’s about human connection.
The show places contestants in unfamiliar environments where they must complete missions with limited resources. To succeed, they rely heavily on the help of local communities.
“The participants are required to interact with local residents in order to complete their missions,” explained Maya. This interactive format brings authentic exposure to local traditions, values, and daily life — something rare in mainstream media.
The Indonesian shoot involves 42 foreign nationals, including hosts, contestants, and crew, assisted by 20 local crew members. This large-scale project brings new energy and attention to destinations like Pulo Majeti that may otherwise go unnoticed internationally.
Pulo Majeti itself is no stranger to cultural significance. Every year, it hosts the Hajat Bumi or Ngabumi ritual — a three-day thanksgiving ceremony that blends Sundanese traditions, communal meals, and spiritual performances. In 2023, the event drew crowds including the Governor of West Java and several national artists.
Between Legend and Legacy: The Future of Pulo Majeti
Beyond cultural rituals, Pulo Majeti is steeped in local legends. Many believe it holds mystical powers, tied to ancient kingdoms and supernatural stories. Some say the island was once the retreat of spiritual leaders, making it a sacred and mysterious place.
With rising international exposure, the local government is working to preserve Pulo Majeti’s authenticity while improving infrastructure. Steps include free Wi-Fi, environmental cleanliness, and cultural education for youth. These efforts aim to protect its sacred identity while embracing tourism.
Maya Dewi shared hopes that Asian Express will serve as a launchpad to bring Banjar’s cultural gems — especially Pulo Majeti — into global awareness. “We hope this program can promote our tourism and culture, not just locally but internationally,” she said.
Thanks to its spiritual roots, rich heritage, and growing spotlight, Pulo Majeti stands on the path of becoming not just a hidden sacred place, but a global symbol of Indonesia’s living culture. (*)
