TIMES MALAYSIA, JAKARTA – As millions of Muslims from around the world prepare for the spiritual journey of Hajj 2025, health and safety remain top priorities—especially for elderly pilgrims and those with physical vulnerabilities.

Among the most common complaints reported by pilgrims are joint pain and swollen feet, symptoms that often result from prolonged walking and physical strain during the pilgrimage.

Dr. Yudha Mathan Sakti, the Coordinator of the Visitation Team, shed light on the causes and risks associated with these health issues. “Several pilgrims experience joint pain and swollen feet because they have to walk long distances, and some even perform Umrah multiple times,” he stated.

“Crowded conditions, particularly during tawaf or while getting off transport vehicles, increase the likelihood of being pushed, stepped on, or falling," he added.

These physical challenges are intensified by environmental and logistical factors. The terrain in and around the holy sites is not always smooth or easy to navigate. In some areas, water accumulates and creates slippery surfaces.

Other parts may have road obstructions or uneven paths that are difficult to notice, especially in large crowds. These conditions make walking not only exhausting but potentially hazardous.

Inappropriate footwear adds another layer to the problem. Many pilgrims wear sandals or shoes that are not designed for long-distance walking under the harsh desert sun.

As a result, feet become sore, skin may blister, and the risk of falls increases—leading to further complications such as ankle injuries or muscle strain.

For those experiencing mild symptoms such as joint stiffness or foot swelling, Dr. Yudha recommends simple yet effective measures. “Rest and apply a cold compress as a first response,” he advised.

He also said that t’s important to not ignore the pain. The pilgrim must to report their condition to the nearest health officer immediately. This was aimed for the pilgrim to be able to receive proper care or be referred to a local health facility in Saudi Arabia if necessary.

With Hajj 2025 peak approaching, health teams are urging pilgrims to take preventive measures seriously. These include wearing comfortable, supportive footwear, staying hydrated, avoiding overexertion, and seeking medical help early when symptoms appear.

Educational campaigns and on-site medical services are also being strengthened to ensure that pilgrims can fulfill their religious duties safely and comfortably.

Ultimately, the physical demands of Hajj require both preparation and awareness. As Dr. Yudha emphasized, timely treatment and preventive care are essential to avoid worsening conditions. With proper support and health awareness, pilgrims can focus on the spiritual essence of Hajj 2025 while minimizing the risk of injury or illness. (*)
