TIMES MALAYSIA, BUKITTINGGI – The morning sun rises quietly over Bukittinggi, painting the sky with the softest shade of gold. Beneath it, the rooftops glow with warmth, while far beyond, a towering figure stands firm and calm—Mount Singgalang.
Wrapped in gentle mist, its green slopes stretch gracefully toward the clouds, offering a tranquil panorama that stills the heart.
Mount Singgalang, an inactive volcano located in West Sumatra, proudly overlooks the towns of Bukittinggi and Padang Panjang. With an elevation of around 2,877 meters above sea level, this mountain is not merely a geographical feature—it is a living symbol of endurance and serenity.
The locals often describe it as the silent guardian, watching over the city through every dawn and dusk.
The view of Singgalang is best enjoyed in the early morning, when the air feels crisp and pure. As the first light touches the mountain’s peak, a thin blanket of clouds usually rests atop it, creating a sight so calm it feels almost sacred.
From rooftops, hotel balconies, or quiet street corners, visitors can witness this harmony between sky and earth—an everyday miracle that never loses its charm.
The mountain holds a crater lake known as Telaga Dewi, nestled near the summit. Surrounded by mossy trees and delicate mist, the lake mirrors the sky, making it a favorite spot for hikers seeking peace in nature’s silence.
Though the trail to Singgalang is steep and challenging, it rewards each step with fresh air, birdsong, and the scent of pine carried by the wind.
“Every time I see Singgalang in the morning, it feels like a reminder to slow down,” said Nabila, a local resident who enjoys watching the sunrise before starting her day. “The mountain doesn’t move, but somehow, it keeps everything alive," she added.
While Mount Singgalang is often overshadowed by its twin, Mount Marapi, its silent beauty speaks differently. It doesn’t roar or demand attention. Instead, it teaches stillness, a kind of peace only found in places untouched by noise.
Visitors coming to Bukittinggi can simply stand on a rooftop or a hill, breathe the cool air, and feel the rhythm of nature resonate from this silent peak.
For travelers who seek more than just a destination, Mount Singgalang offers an experience of contemplation. Amidst the sound of rustling leaves and the soft hum of morning life, the mountain reminds every soul that true grandeur often lies in silence. (*)
