TIMES MALAYSIA, JAKARTA – Speaking English fluently is a dream for many people, especially in this era of globalization. When we want to travel abroad or perhaps do some studying we really need to be able to speak English fluently.
Recognizing the importance of this international language, we took a look at the content of Marina Mongilko, co-founder of language learning platform, Linguatrip. In her content, Marina shares five practical tips that can help anyone to speak English more confidently
1. Make a Cheat Sheet
One of the first steps Marina suggests we take to speak English confidently is to make a cheat sheet. This can include important phrases, new vocabulary, or even dialog that is often used in everyday situations.
This way, you not only remember the words, but also understand the context in which they are used. “You have to know how to communicate correctly, you have to learn the phrases and templates and the correct language structure that you have noted down” she said.
If you often communicate in a work context, prepare a cheat sheet containing business-related vocabulary. Put this cheat sheet in a visible place, such as your desk or in your wallet, so you can access it anytime.
2. Talk to Siri/Amazon/Alexa/OK Google
Marina also suggests utilizing existing technology. Talking to virtual assistants like Siri, Amazon Alexa, or Google Assistant can be a fun way to practice your English speaking skills.
Try asking questions or giving commands in English. “When we talk to the virtual assistant, we will get instant feedback, we will talk over and over again until the pronunciation is correct," Marina says. In addition to hearing the correct pronunciation, you can also practice live responses. This helps improve fluency and confidence when speaking.
3. Talk to Yourself
Spending time talking to yourself may sound strange, but according to Marina, it's a very effective technique for improving English speaking skills. You can start by explaining what you are doing.
“When you talk to yourself you will be talking in your own head, this will not make you feel pressured,” she says. This technique helps you think in English and hone your speaking skills without feeling pressured.
4. Imitation Technique
One way to improve English speaking skills is to use imitation techniques. Try watching a movie or listening to an English podcast, then imitate the pronunciation and intonation used by the speaker.
“When watching a movie or something else, we will listen to how the intonation and pronunciation of a word, we can also see it from the subtitles, we can imitate the pronunciation of the intonation of the characters we have seen,” Marina added.
5. Think in English
Finally, Marina suggests to start thinking in English. This is probably the most challenging step, but also the most effective. Try to replace your everyday thoughts with English. “You can start by thinking in English before speaking in English and apply it to your daily life.”
Speaking English fluently takes practice and patience. The five tips shared by Marina Mongilko can be a guide for anyone who wants to improve their English. Remember that learning is a journey, and every small step you take will bring you closer to your goal. (*)
